Japanese fabric gathered skirt with double hem
By Airin Gomura
Sometimes, you just come across such pretty fabric that you need to buy it and make something. I popped into Tessuti Fabrics (www.tessuti.com.au) for fabric chalk, but found this Japanese fabric, “Osaka Blossom” and had to take some home. This resulted in a very simple gathered skirt, which has been really versatile and had many wears through Autumn to the chilly Winter days we are experiencing now (+ tights of course).
I added a bit of character by doing a pleated double hem. I plan on making another skirt for spring, this time with a triple pleat hem!
I wore this skirt out to lunch in Balgowlah, on the Sydney northern beaches one day, where I was approached by the lovely Tracey, at her store, Pulp Creative (www.pulpcreativepaper.com.au), to make one for her too. If you are into paper crafts or have a stationery fetish, definitely pop in and have a look. This store always inspires me to get crafty or go on an origami frenzy. I am without fail, unashamedly amazed at every new window display and the gorgeous, decorative things you can do with paper! You’re also bound to find a gift for any artsy, retro loving girls out there.
I think anyone who can sew a straight line could make a gathered skirt. Double hems are a little more tricky, but worth the extra effort. Gathered skirts are such a cute way to show off beautiful fabric – do a double or triple hem, add pockets, a lace hem, the options are endless… Have you made a gathered skirt? I’d be so grateful if you would share some photos.
