Japanese Sewing Pattern – Vintage Floral Skirt

By Airin Gomura

It was a perfect, sunny, winter Sunday in Sydney so Dave, his SLR and myself hopped outside to take some shots of my new skirt.  Looking back, I think heels would have been a better choice with the length of the skirt, but oh well.

This skirt is made from the Yoke Skirt pattern from the Japanese sewing pattern book, “Sewing Recipe” I reviewed recently. The instructions really felt like I was in a sewing class, going through each step with photos, with special attention on the more difficult bits like inserting an invisible zipper.  I got seriously motivated to create a garment that was as well constructed and neatly finished as the example in the book’s pictures.  So here it is.

The fabric is a floral cotton blend I picked up at a charity store for about $4 for A LOT.  Maybe it used to be a large tablecloth or a flat sheet?  Whatever it was, I still have a lot of this lovely floral fabric left to play with.
