5 Spring wedding craft ideas –

Spring is almost here and with it comes the joyous wedding season. It’s left me reminiscing about our wedding, and all the wedding crafts I was busy creating this time last year. Oh, that was such a fun time! Here are five wedding craft ideas that would suit a spring wedding 🙂

1. Paper Pinwheel Wall Art –

Flower Ball – My Mum made this for me using flour-based clay. Maybe she’ll do one for us? She used to teach this craft in Japan, so she is quite an expert.

You just need wrapping paper in your theme colours, paper doilies and a hot glue gun. Here is a great tutorial by Honest to Nod on how to make paper pinwheels.

2. Paper Crane Mobile –

Paper cranes aren’t hard to fold once you have done a few. I threaded fishing line using a needle, tying a not at the base of each crane. I find videos the best way to learn origami. Here’s a video for how to fold a paper crane.

3. Blackboard Wedding Signs –

I painted easels and picture frames with chalkboard paint to make signs for our wedding. I recommend spraying with clear lacquer to keep the chalk in place after you have created your artwork. I also found liquid chalk pens to be the best if you have lots of writing to do.

4. Fabric Backdrop –

Yellow floral fabric, blue sheer fabric and white broderie anglaise were cut into 3cm strips using serrated scissors. Hang off a long rope and simply staple in place!

5. Bunting –

Here is my super easy bunting tutorial.

This is a picture of me on the day before the wedding, setting up the venue. It’s the only photo I could find where you can see the aisle and all the handmade things in place. I look so daggy in my hoodie  Here are more pictures from our handmade wedding.

Look inside a vintage Japanese knitting pattern book –

I bought this gorgeous vintage Japanese knitting pattern book for just $1, at a book sale in Japantown, San Francisco. It’s full of hats, scarves and mitton patterns, for both knitting and crochet. The retro styling is so cute; I just had to share some pages with you.

These 70’s coats are so cool. I would totally wear them now.

But before I can think about knitting anything else, I have to finish my circle scarf! What are you working on this weekend?

A trip to San Francisco Japantown

One sunny day in San Francisco, I decided to take my new (secondhand) bike for a ride to Japantown. Just over 10 minutes downhill, I found myself  transported back in time to Japan of the 1960s. There was something vintage and quaint about this neighbourhood. It’s fitting that the Peace Plaza and Peace Pagoda serves as a meeting spot for the older generations of Japanese Americans.

Japantown San Francisco Restaurants

The restaurants in the Japan Center reminded me of the places run by sweet old ladies in northern rural Japan where my Obaachan (grandmother) lives.

Of course, modern Japan has crept in, including a Daiso discount store; everything is $1.50.

Lots of sewing, knitting and craft supplies;—all just $1.50 each. They had fabric too.

You have to stop by Kinokuniya and get lost in wonderful Japanese books.

All my favourite Japanese sewing books are sold at this bookstore too.

How convenient; Japantown also has a Japanese supermarket, Nijiya. I stocked up on pantry essentials and bought myself an obento box for lunch. From the dozens of different types, I picked the Makunouchi, which is kind of the supreme pizza equivalent (you get a bit of everything).

I had such a nice little trip to Japantown, I felt as though I was back in Japan, just for a little while. You probably also noticed that I have started writing the blog in Japanese. It’s really good practice for my deteriorating Japanese, and I thought it might be good to branch out a bit to a Japanese audience too.

How to make Noren: Japanese room divider partition curtains

Noren is a Japanese curtain commonly used to divide areas, such as the kitchen from the living room. You will also see noren at the entrance of many Japanese restaurants.

We’ve just moved into a studio in San Francisco. It’s less than half the size of our 2-bedroom apartment back home in Australia, but we don’t miss all that extra room at all;—it’s amazing how little space you need to live truly happy lives.

Our studio apartment has an eat-in kitchen that leads to the living room. There is a doorway opening between these two areas, but no door. So I thought a noren would be just the thing to separate the two rooms as well as keep in some heat in the living room.

Step-6-How-to-make-noren-room-divider-curtain-partition-sewing-pattern-tutorial

I bought the fabric, a thick brown and cream chambray, at the Fabric Outlet in the Mission. It cost me a little less than $12 for 2 yards. The buttons are handmade by the lovely Sarah at Fulton & Co.

You will need

  • Fabric (thick, woven fabric both to block light and look attractive from the reverse side)
  • Curtain rod
  • Buttons, ribbons, etc for embellishment

Instructions

Step 1

Measure your doorway width and height. Divide the width by half and add on 9cm at the top, 4cm at the bottom and 1cm on the two side edges for seam allowance. Cut two pieces.

Step 2

Right sides facing, stitch the top 19cm (9cm for curtain rod loop + 10cm for closed section of noren)  to create the centre flap of the curtain. Press the 1cm seams apart.

Step 3

Fold and press the seam twice at 5mm intervals to hide the raw edge. I also did a basting stitch to hold the seam together as my fabric was quite thick.

Step 4

Stitch seams and remove basting stitches.

Step 5

Repeat with side edges. Fold and press top edge to 9cm mark. Ensure your curtain rod fits! Stitch.

Step 6

Hem the bottom of the curtain and you’re finished!

Leave your noren plain, or embellish with pretty buttons and embroidery. I drew a pattern directly on my noren. I bought these pens by Chako Ace in Japan; the ink fades gradually over time! I then stitched on some ceramic buttons.

Handmade Ceramic Buttons – What’s your button craft idea?

COMPETITION HAS ENDED. You could win $20 to spend on ceramic handmade buttons by FULTON & CO. Details below. I’m having lots of fun decorating our new pad in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. This means furniture shopping, stocking up on kitsch nick nacks at thrift stores and of course, making soft furnishings! My pink Brother XL2610 Free-Arm Sewing Machine  just arrived from Amazon so I am planning all the things I’m going to sew to decorate our new home. I plan to make a room divider curtain to separate the kitchen from the living room, maybe using button curtain tabs. In Japan, this type of curtain is called a “Noren”; you may have seen it in Japanese restaurant doorways. (Image sources L to R clockwise: curbly.com, sandgasa.exblog.jp and bellemaison.jp x 3) Button curtain tabs and noren room divider curtain Speaking of buttons, Sarah from FULTON & CO has kindly offered a giveaway to Sew in Love readers. Her Etsy store sells beautiful ceramic handmade buttons. I think they are wonderfully understated and elegant. Their natural colours would be perfect for my apartment’s colour scheme. Being handmade, the buttons have lots of rustic character too. Sarah is giving away $20 to spend on your favourite button style from her Etsy store.
