Treasure Island Flea Market Shopping –

We joined our Aussie friends to visit Treasure Island Flea on the weekend. Treasure Island is a man-made island located between San Francisco and Oakland. Once owned by the US Navy, this arty, vintage-galore market is a fantastic use of a great space in an amazing location. I love you San Francisco!

A 20 minute bus ride takes you from San Francisco to Treasure Island. You can enjoy the flea market or take a stroll around the island to enjoy the unobstructed views of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge.

There are many great little stalls, selling antiques, vintage furniture and handmade things. One that stopped me and my friend Liz in our tracks was “Studs of History”. Robin makes all her jewellery by hand using vintage beads, gems and crystals. She has a Studs of History Etsy store too!

It was way too hard to choose, but I finally decided on these blue crystal stud earrings. They change from blue to green, depending on the light!

I love succulents because they are so hardy. Even I can keep them alive in our little studio apartment! If our place was bigger, I would totally get a vintage poster this big… Find out more about Treasure Island Flea here.

Japanese sashiko pattern book review –

What is sashiko? It’s a type of Japanese hand embroidery that uses small stitches to create traditional patterns. Sashiko originated from the need to reinforce and strengthen fabrics. I recently found out that the stitches also have an insulation effect. Now, it’s enjoyed as a fun, decorative craft with many designs for you to try out.

This Japanese sashiko pattern book is called “First time sashiko”. Perfect for anyone who’s never tried sashiko before (like me).

You see sashiko on kendo and judo attire, because of its strengthening effect. This book introduces how you can incorporate sashiko embroidery to everyday items around the home. The book cover below looks kind of Scandinavian doesn’t it?

This book is only available from Amazon Japan, but you can preview the book here:

剣道着や柔道着に刺し子はよく使われるようですが、この本はデイリーに使う小物で楽しむ刺し子を教えてくれます。下の本のカバーはおしゃれなスウェーデンのデザインみたいですね。

Coasters are a nice small projects to ease yourself into sashiko.

All the patterns come with a real-size sheet. All you need to do is trace them on to you fabric and start stitching!

I’ve started making bento lunches for Dave twice a week, so I really do need something like the above tea towels to wrap up his lunch boxes. Please check out my twitter feed for my bento box creations. My favourite so far is the tuna sushi bento box.

The insulation effect is put to good use with sashiko embroidery on water bottle covers. Much more pleasing to the eye than plastic bottles.

Free Mens Pyjama Pants Sewing Pattern Tutorial –

My husband requested a pair of pyjama pants, so I picked up this Anpanman cartoon fabric in Tokyo recently at Yuzawaya. Anpanman is an extremely popular kids anime series, where a super hero with a head made of bread fights off the baddies. It’s cute and very good for my husband who is learning Japanese.

I used a pattern for men’s judo pants, by the Japanese fabric brand, Nani Iro as a base for these pyjama pants. The judo pants are actually reversible and full length. The following instructions should help you make either my 3/4 pyjama pants version or the original full length, reversible judo pants.

Before you get started

This free pattern is available from Nani Iro’s website. Download judo pants sewing pattern. I shortened the pants by about 25cm. I drew the pattern directly onto my folded fabric and cut two pieces together. Don’t forget to add 1cm of seam allowance before cutting!

Sizing

This is a men’s medium in Japan sizing, which is about a size small in western sizing. This pattern makes pants which expand in the elasticated waist from 64cm-108cm.

Mens-judo-pants-sewing-pattern

Step 1

Create button holes on the front of pants at the location specified in the pattern; 7cm across from the front edge, 2cm down from the top edge. These two button holes are for the drawstring waist. How-to-make-mens-pyjama-pants-step-1

Step 2

Join the front and back edges of pants, with a 1cm seam allowance. Zig zag the edges for a nice finish. How-to-make-mens-pyjama-pants-step-2

Step 3

Stitch the inner leg seams. Zig zag stitch along edges. How-to-make-mens-pyjama-pants-step-3

Step 4 (I didn’t do this step)

If you are making reversible pants, insert the outer pants into the inner pants and stitch the waist band together, right sides facing.

Step 5

Fold down the waistband and stitch into place. How-to-make-mens-pyjama-pants-step-5

Step 6 (I didn’t do this step)

If you are making reversible pants, fold up 1cm of both outer and inner fabrics and stitch together.

Step 7

Hem the pants. How-to-make-mens-pyjama-pants-step-7

Step 8

Insert elastic or drawstring cord. I did both. How-to-make-mens-pyjama-pants-step-9

Finished!

Apparently, they are very comfortable.
