Win a FREE copy of this magazine: Competition ends 31 May 2013!

I was so excited to find this magazine, “FEMALE” Spring 2013 edition in Tokyo. It looks like a fashion magazine, but it’s so much better, because you can make everything that the models are wearing! How cool is that? All designs come with a real-size sewing pattern.

FEMALE-Japanese-Sewing-Mag-Review-1

Unlike the majority of Japanese sewing patterns which are cute and girly, I really like the edgy, street-style designs in this magazine. These shirts are totally my style and I am loving the peplum blouse on the right!

This magazine is available for purchase from Amazon:

These cat ear hats are very Harajuku aren’t they?

FEMALE-Japanese-Sewing-Mag-Review-3

Patterns for six different dresses and four different detachable collars to mix and match. So much fun!

Four types of pants to make; tuck pants, salopette (overalls), bermuda and skinny.

FEMALE-Japanese-Sewing-Mag-Review-5

I think there are 50+ garments to make in this magazine, including peplum skirts, maxi skirts, bags, cardigans, motorcycle jacket, sweatshirts…just to name a few!

FEMALE-Japanese-Sewing-Mag-Review-6

There are also sewing patterns for a rainy day. It doesn’t seem to rain much here in San Francisco, but if it did, I would love to look chic in a waterproof raincoat.

Japanese sewing book review: Summer clothes in 1 day – 1日あれば作れちゃう夏の服

With the weather warming up, I’ve started to plan what I will make to wear in summer. This Japanese sewing book is called “Summer clothes in 1 day” and is perfect for a fast sewing projects using light and airy cotton fabrics.

White seems to be the colour of Summer 2013? I’m not one to follow the latest fashion trends, but I would most certainly wear this white maxi dress! You can also make the floral camisole on the right based on the same pattern.

I’ve wanted ruffled shorts like this for so long, so I’m going to have to make a pair now!

This top looks very easy but the detail on the back makes it a bit unique. Perfect to wear with skinny jeans.

This dress on the right is actually made of four pieces; one big back piece, one front piece in the centre and two side pieces. It might be fun to make a colour-block dress using different colours for the front pieces.

This book also includes easy accessories too. I think this is a great way to use up those fabric remnants.

In total there are more 28 clothing patterns to make, as well as accessories such as headbands, bags and scarves. This book is full of illustrations, so it would suit absolute beginners to sewing Japanese patterns. It is only available from Amazon Japan (link above). Check out this blog post on how to buy books from Amazon Japan if you need help.

Vintage kimonos are beautiful, but we don't got to wear them so often! Instead of letting them sit in storage, here are some dresses and a bag which have been made out of vintage kimonos.

Dresses from vintage kimono –

My mum and I went vintage kimono shopping in Japan recently, and she has already turned one red kimono into a party dress for me.

My parents live in Australia, so I won’t get to try on my new dress until August; when I will be visiting them for my brother’s wedding 🙁

This kimono is made from a Japanese obi sash. That's the sash you wear around a kimono to keep it in place. Obi is usually made of beautiful, thick fabric, perfect for upcycling into bags.

She also made me an oversized clutch bag from the obi sash we picked out during the same shopping trip.

Can’t wait to match it with casual, black skinny jeans!

Vintage Kimono Dress - This dress is made from a vintage kimono. It's great way to keep wearing these beautiful fabrics!

Here’s me wearing a dress made from a recycled kimono that my Mum made for me last year. I’m also carrying a purse she made from an obi sash.

Kimono fabrics are so beautiful, but unfortunately, there’s just no occasions for us to wear them anymore. I’m so glad that I can enjoy them in their new life as party dresses!

“Wrapped in Tenderness” Japanese Sewing Book Review –

I picked up “Wrapped in Tenderness” by Etsuko Sakurai on my recent trip to Japan. The dress on the front cover was too sweet to resist!I also really liked that the book has sewing patterns for more grown-up, less girly clothes as well.

In total, there are fifteen sewing patterns including dresses, tops, blouses, skirts and jackets.

I wear button up shirts a lot, so I like the idea of a zip up shirt, like the white one above.

This white ruffle top could be cute in spring with boyfriend jeans?

Japanese-sewing-book-review-inner-child-4

The patterns in this book are certainly not easy, but there are detailed diagrams to guide you along the way. I’m really glad I purchased it and hope to make ruffled top soon.

Vintage kimono shopping in Tokyo –

I just had the most wonderful 10 days in Japan with my parents, shopping in Tokyo, relaxing with my grandma in Yamagata and catching up with friends in Chiba.

In Tokyo, my Mum took me to the Yuzawaya at Kamata station in Tokyo. As well as the usual sewing supplies, this store also sells vintage kimonos! She makes dresses, bags and accessories out of vintage kimonos, so she was taking this opportunity to stock up.

Vintage-kimono-fabric-Tokyo-Japan-2

We picked out this red kimono for her to make into an A-line dress for me. I’ve asked her to make me a clutch bag using the black, gold and orange obi sash.

Japanese-sewing-books-in-Japan

I bought several Japanese sewing books which weighed my suitcase down for the rest of the trip, but it was worth it! There will be a Japanese sewing book giveaway soon, so please do stay tuned 🙂

I thought these stuffed dog toy packs on the right were really cute.
