Best of Etsy – Pointy Brogues & Oxfords

Fernando brogues @ Wittner shoes
& Reserved vintage brogues @ Etsy

Small and Mousy vintage brogues @ Etsy & Learn to Read vintage brogues @ Etsy

I have been on the hunt for a pair of brogues.  Pointy ones, black patent is ideal and preferably vintage.  I’ve been eyeing off the Wittner Fernandos, but as much as I like them, I’ve seen them on so many girls around Sydney.  Is it just Sydney?  Must have something to do with the fact that there’s about five(?) Wittner stores in Sydney CBD…

As always, I have turned to trusty Etsy for a shortlist of cool vintage shoes that fit my brogue wishlist.  Please let me know if you see any cute brogues out there!  I want to wear brogues with slim, cropped pants and a pussy bow blouse.  Comfy office wear.  Maybe opaque tights, flared mini skirt and a turtleneck on Fridays to kick on to after work drinks.  Do you wear brogues to work?

Detachable Collars

Retro prints are so cool.  It’s nice to see the swirls of pink in this crazy blue, slinky fabric.  I bought it on ebay, and wanted to make something for summer in a modern shape, to offset the borderline daggy retro print.  I took a simple tank top I owned, and made a new pattern which had billowing side panels and a cropped front. Thanks to my trusty overlocker, even this slippery fabric turned into a rather nice top.  It’s a bit rock’n’ roll but with a grandma print – love it.

Review – Japanese Sewing Pattern Stylish Dress Book 2

I think it’s safe to say that the Stylish Dress Book series by Yoshiko Tsukiori were fundamental in propelling Japanese sewing books to an international audience. The quality of the photos, the cute, wearable patterns and the very simple presentation makes this one one of my favourite sewing books (and I have lots). Today I am reviewing the book most crafters refer to as Stylish Dress Book 2, as it is the second book by the author with the same English name.

The book starts off with a beautiful photoshoot of a model wearing each design. The styling is very natural and a bit whimsical. It’s not corny at all and flipping through the photos, it’s like you are looking at a trendy fashion magazine, not a foreign sewing book. The photos are followed by a black and white section of sewing instructions. There is a drawing of each pattern design so at a single glance, you get a good understanding of the structure of the garment, such as its shape, cut and construction. Like all Japanese sewing books, Stylish Dress Book contains a pull out section with all patterns in true size.

In total, there are patterns for nine tops and seventeen dresses in this book. They are all flowy and casual, smock style designs, so nothing fitted or too formal. I think that the roomy designs are a good thing, as Japanese sizes are very small. Again, it’s the natural and sweet designs that attract me to the clothes in this book. It makes you want to whip up a dress, grab a rattan basket and run off into the fields to pick some wildflowers (insert Sound of Music opening scene). I’ve found it difficult to pick a favourite pattern, so I will go with three.

1. Pattern A – Pleated neck top with ruffled sleeves (which I made in pink and see Novita from Very Purple Person’s version here)

2. Pattern D – Drop sleeve dress (as seen on the cover)

3. Pattern K – Smock dress with ruffle details

How difficult are the designs to make? Not very. Obviously, it depends on the design, but the majority are simple, smock styles that can easily be made with very basic dressmaking skills. It also helps that any complicated steps are clearly explained by diagrams; part of the reason why so many non-Japanese people have been able to make garments from this book.

If I was to complain about anything in this book, that would be that the designs become a bit repetitive and you can only make so many smock dresses. However, seeing as though there are 26 patterns in all, at 1,365yen it is still very good value. I highly recommend Stylish Dress Book, especially if you are new to Japanese sewing pattern books.

Japanese Sewing Pattern – Vintage Floral Skirt

It was a perfect, sunny, winter Sunday in Sydney so Dave, his SLR and myself hopped outside to take some shots of my new skirt.  Looking back, I think heels would have been a better choice with the length of the skirt, but oh well.

This skirt is made from the Yoke Skirt pattern from the Japanese sewing pattern book, “Sewing Recipe” I reviewed recently. The instructions really felt like I was in a sewing class, going through each step with photos, with special attention on the more difficult bits like inserting an invisible zipper.  I got seriously motivated to create a garment that was as well constructed and neatly finished as the example in the book’s pictures.  So here it is.

The fabric is a floral cotton blend I picked up at a charity store for about $4 for A LOT.  Maybe it used to be a large tablecloth or a flat sheet?  Whatever it was, I still have a lot of this lovely floral fabric left to play with.

Knitting a Gift – Childrens Apple Pocket Scarf

For my niece, Molly’s 5th birthday, I decided to knit her a cotton scarf to keep her wrapped up for the upcoming winter.  She has a grandmother who is highly skilled at knitting, so I didn’t try to make her anything too fancy.  She already has beautiful handmade cardigans and socks and other advanced knitting garments, so I went for the cute factor with this simple scarf 🙂

I was inspired by Jessica from Zakka Life’s Pretty in Pink Scarf post to add red pockets and applique apples on this white cotton scarf.  I also took inspiration from another blogger, Hello Sandwich’s quirky wrapping ideas to bundle up the scarf and a set of Play-Doh into a colourful gift.  I chopped the top off a brown paper bag and wrapped a thick strip of pink scrap paper around the middle.  The pom pom is made from a plastic shopping bag and for the final touch, I cut out cute little vintage pictures from a children’s book I bought ages ago from a thrift store for 50 cents.  I had so much fun putting this present together!  Of course, Molly took no interest in the wrapping, and was super excited about the Play-Doh only…
