DIY FashionSewing Pattern Review

Burda Patterns Sweetheart Dress in Yellow Hawaiian Print

I’ve spent hours looking at Burda patterns – there’s so many sewing patterns on their website! This is their Sweetheart dress (04/2013), and I’ve added a front zipper to it. My childhood friend from Japan is getting married next month, so I wanted to sew a dress to wear to her wedding. Whilst there’s lots and lots of dress sewing patterns out there, I had a rather strict criteria. Firstly, I’m still breastfeeding so it had to be front opening. Secondly, the wedding is in Guam so it’s going to be super humid. And lastly, the bride-to-be has requested the guests wear bright, tropical colours.

Shirtdresses feel too casual for a wedding, and I wasn’t too excited about wearing a wrap dress. When I found this dress with a sweetheart neckline, I just had to figure out a way to make it fit my nursing requirements. Inserting a front zipper was the answer!

McCalls Patterns M6959 Wrap Dress: Join the Sew Along!

This McCalls Patterns wrap dress seems to have great reviews on Amazon and other sewing pattern review websites. I think a wrap dress is universally flattering because it’s snug at the waist and loose on the hips. So regardless of whether you are lucky enough to have curves, or if you are like me and have zero curves, the fabric just flows over your hips, giving the illusion of a svelte waist.

10 Practical Homemade Baby Shower Gifts Mamas will Love AND Use

There’s nothing quite like giving homemade baby shower gifts. It’s a very exciting time for the Gomura household; we are about to welcome another baby into our clan! My brother and his wife are expecting their first baby in February. That’s right, little Umi will soon have a little cousin to play with. And it means I’ll soon have another little person I can make adorable things for 🙂

When I was pregnant, I went on a baby crafting frenzy. 4 months into motherhood, there’s a few things which stand out as my “essentials”, and that’s the type of thing I’d like to make as baby shower gifts. Newborn clothes and toys of course make lovely gifts, but I guess I am of the practical type (aka Virgo).  Here’s a list of extremely useful homemade baby presents which will be loved AND used well beyond the newborn days.

1. Burp Cloths

DIY Burp Cloths: Simply serge / overlock towelling and cotton fabrics together. One of the most useful things in my baby bag!

It’s only from the second month that Umi really needed burp cloths. And from then we couldn’t do without them. Now we go through at least two burp cloths per day. These are so easy to make – the trick is to get the size right. Mine are 15cm x 45cm (6″ x 18″), with rounded corners. Just grab a pretty cotton print fabric and some towelling, cut, and serge together. Easy!

Top Tip – For some reason, towelling fabric is really expensive in Australia ($40/meter!), so I bought a huge white bath sheet for $8 and used that instead.

2. Washcloths

DIY Baby Wash Cloths

Little babies have adorable chubby chins, but milk and drool love to gather in those lovable skin folds. My soft washcloths made of flannel and towelling have been perfect for wiping delicate baby necks.

Top Tip – Look for flannelette sheets at secondhand / thrift stores. You’ll get plenty of fabric and used flannelette is very absorbent.

3. Gauze Swaddle Blankets

I stocked up on double gauze when I went fabric shopping in Japan. You just have to hem the edges and you have the most versatile item in your diaper bag. As for the size, I looked at commercially available swaddle blankets, and decided that about 1m x 1m (1.1×1.1 yds) is a good size. Other than swaddling Umi, my gauze blankets have been used as a: Nursing cover, sun shade, sling, changing mat and a stroller liner. I need to make more!

Here’s Umi all swaddled up in a homemade gauze blanket when she came home from the hospital, and more recently sitting on the same blanket in the car. Don’t you just love the sloth print fabric? It’s Japanese double gauze fabric 😀

4. Changing Mat

Every time I need to change Umi in a public bathroom, I’m so happy I made this roll-up changing mat. You’ll also find changing mats / clutches with built-in pockets to store diapers and wipes, but I like the simplicity of my version. Umi uses it as a play mat when we are visiting friends, and she has had naps on it many times too. Here’s how I made a changing mat recently for my sister-in-law’s baby shower gift:

DIY Baby Changing Mat Tutorial: This is a fast and easy sewing project which makes a wonderful baby shower gift. You can use PUL or oilcloth to make the changing mat waterproof. Using either batting or flannel makes the mat nice and softly padded for little babies. Place an elastic loop about 1/4 of the way down the shorter side, so you can easily roll up the mat. This changing mat is a diaper bag essential!

Top Tip – Whilst your at it, make a matching wet bag (below). You can use the same outer and inner fabrics – just add a zipper.

5. Wet Bag

We use cloth diapers, so a wet bag is essential to store soiled diapers when we are out and about. Even for non-cloth diaper babies, this is a pretty handy bag to keep dirty clothes and bibs separated from clean items in your bag.

There’s a ton of sewing tutorials for making wet bags. Below is a very detailed one:

6. Ring Sling

When we lived in San Francisco, we walked absolutely everywhere. The ring sling was super handy for this, especially when Umi was too tiny to fit into the Ergo baby carrier. My ring sling is made of linen. I went for a unisex neutral tone fabric because Dave usually ends up carrying the baby. 🙂 I added a zippered pocket too to stash money, keys etc so I don’t have to carry a handbag as well as wear the sling.

DIY Ring Sling - Make your own ring sling. This one is made of linen fabric and I have attached a zipper pocket.

I used this ring sling tutorial combined with the method below to create the pleats:

7. Diaper Bag

DIY Diaper Bag: Handmade diaper bag with polka dot denim fabric.

My mum is very talented at bag making, so she made me a diaper bag out of denim polka dot fabric 🙂 I love that it has both shoulder straps and a cross-body strap. There’s also an external zipper pocket, to keep my keys, wallet and phone handy. It fits all the baby essentials, and so much more!

8. Swaddle Wrap

DIY Baby Swaddle Wrap - Get this free sewing pattern and make your own baby wrap.

For those days when the baby is far too wriggly to wrap with a blanket, or it’s 3am and it’s all too hard, the swaddle wrap is your best friend. I’ve made a few from this free swaddle wrap sewing pattern.

9. Mittens

Dave and I went to a parenting course before Umi was born, and we were told that mittens are not recommended because babies learn so much from touching things with their hands. So we were all for a mitten-free baby, until Umi started scratching her face. Actually, it’s more like crawling at her face. Even with trimmed nails, she did a lot of damage to herself, so we’ve introduced mittens for night time only. Here’s a great tutorial for diy baby mittens, and another version with ribbed cuffs.

10. Freezer Friendly Food

I had to include homemade freezable food in this list, because it was one of the best things I received from my awesome and generous girlfriends. We knew we were leaving San Francisco as soon as we could fly with the baby, so we wanted to minimise the amount of luggage to take with us. That’s why I requested food gifts at my baby shower. It turned out to be the best decision ever – our freezer was full to the brim with nutritious homemade food cooked lovingly by our friends. Curries, lasagne, pasta sauces and soups just needed to be defrosted and we had a healthy meal to enjoy, despite being sleep deprived and exhausted from looking after a newborn baby.

What are some “baby essentials” you’ve made which should be included in this list? Do you have any suggestions for practical homemade baby shower gifts?

Homemade Baby Shower Gift Ideas: Here’s 10 practical baby shower gifts mamas will love AND actually use! Sewing tutorials for all 10 gift ideas are included at the link. These super useful items for new mothers include a ring sling, changing mat, diaper bag, wet bag and more.

Goal Setting for 2016: What do you want to CREATE next year?

December is one of my favourite times of the year; holiday season, yummy food, and long beach days (if you live in Australia). This slower pace of life is the perfect opportunity for goal setting for the coming year. Dave and I like to sit down and set both personal and professional goals, but how about setting some CREATIVE goals?

Back in 2014, I set myself some sewing goals. For 2016, I want my goals to encompass all my creative outlets.

I had a pretty eventful year to say the least. I started a YouTube channel, moved to Kansas City for 3 months, had a baby, and then moved back from SF to Australia. Phew! In 2016, I’m excited to be a little more settled, enjoy being a Mama and create awesome blog posts for Sew in Love.

Goal 1: Participate in #MeMadeMay

You’ve probably already heard about Me-Made-May, a sewing challenge where crafty bloggers wear something handmade every day for the month of May. It’s been on my radar for a while now, but I always found an excuse not to take part (like being pregnant). So 2016 is the year! I think it’s a great excuse to finally wear those “special” garments we’ve slaved over to complete. It’s also a fantastic motivator to finish off the projects we all have tucked away in the back of the cupboard!

Goal 2: Take a Photography Course

Photography is the heart and soul of my blog. If it wasn’t for photos, I wouldn’t be able to show you what I made, or how to sew something. And just like any new parent, I’m obsessed with taking photos of Umi 😀

In 2016, I want to improve my photography in a big way. I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll go to a physical class or attend online, but I want to take a photography course in the new year so I can take awesome photos.

Goal 3: Learn Calligraphy

Whether it’s for a birthday or a thank you note, I’m a big fan of handwritten cards. My mother-in-law is in her 70s and has the most beautiful, curly handwriting.  I guess our generation just doesn’t write often enough? My handwriting is pretty ho-hum…so I want to fancy things up a bit by learning Calligraphy.

I want to learn Calligraphy! Here's two great examples from Etsy sellers on how beautiful hand calligraphy can look.

Goal 4: Do #Frocktober

This is a wonderful social media event to raise awareness and funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. The idea of Frocktober is to wear a dress for every day of October and post a photo on social media. I like to sew dresses, but I spend most of my time in jeans, saving those dresses for “special occasions”. So I’m looking forward to dressing more ladylike for a good cause in October 2016.

Goal 5: Make and Sell Digital Sewing Patterns

I love making my own designs and creating sewing patterns to make them a reality. In the new year, I plan to develop a range of professional sewing patterns which can be downloaded and printed at home. It’s just at concept stage at the moment, but be sure to be on the look out for modern sewing patterns with an Asian influence in 2016, right here on Sew in Love.

Do you set goals for yourself? Do you have any creative goals you’d like to share? I’d love to know what crafts you have planned for 2016.

Video: Fabric Shopping in Tokyo at Nippori Textile Town

Every time we return to Japan, it’s absolutely mandatory that I visit Nippori Textile Town in Tokyo. In one day trip, you can completely satisfy your fabric and craft shopping needs!

This Tokyo trip was in the middle of winter as part of a ski holiday, so I am well rugged up in my BRIGHT blue snowboarding jacket. Dave was a bit embarrassed about me wearing this around Tokyo – in the video, you can see I stand out in a sea of black coats, but hey, I was cold!

The last time I went to Nippori to shop for fabric, it was summer, but a typhoon hit as I was shopping. All the wild weather aside, it’s definitely worth a visit so you can overdose on Japanese fabric like double gauze, cotton lawn and linens.

Getting there…

The brilliant thing about this shopping precinct is that it’s within easy walking distance to the train station. Nippori is a very well serviced station so you can catch multiple train lines, hop off and take the East Exit. You’ll see a sign (in English!) which says ‘Nippori Textile Town’ with an arrow. Follow the arrow for about 200m (1/8 mile) and you are there.

Video mini tour

I am due to head back there again in February 2016. I’ll try to do a much better job of recording a “vlog” this time! What do you want to see from Japan? Do you have any requests for photos or videos?

Come with me fabric shopping in Japan! Tokyo's Nippori Textile Town is a must visit for any craft enthusiast. Here you'll find all your fave Japanese fabrics, like cotton lawn and double gauze. There's also rows and rows of craft stores where you can overdose on every sewing equipment you could ever need!
