Simple Joys: Sunshine, sourdough and favourite scents

Simple Joys is a new blog series where I’ll be sharing small happenings or objects which brought a smile to my face. I hope this series will be a reminder to us all to notice the simple things in life that brings us joy.

Hanging sheets outdoors

Sheets drying on a Hills Hoist clothesline — how quintessentially Australian!  But isn’t it funny, sheets dried in the sun smells exactly the same in Australia and in Japan where I grew up. It’s one of my favourite smells.

But most importantly, it helps our family to live a slower life with more intention. I hope you enjoy my experiments and that they help you to make positive changes too.

Room Reveal: Our {Temporary} Living Room

As promised in my house tour, it’s time to share our little living room with you all. I’m calling it our temporary living room, because within the next year to 18 months, our house will be knocked down and rebuilt from scratch. For now, this is where our family sips tea, reads, does yoga stretches and hosts impromptu dance offs!

50’s Beach Cottage House Tour (The Before Pictures!)

I’m taking you on a mini house tour today! Our new (old) house is a sweet little 3 bedroom cottage, in a beachside suburb in Wollongong, 1 hour south of Sydney. We are only 10 minutes walk to the beach and the train station. Dave’s office and Umi’s daycare is 20 minutes walk away, so location-wise we are very happy. The house itself is a mash-up of original 50’s features and updates which may have been done around the 80’s 🙂  We’ve been here for a month now and it’s looking more likely that we will knock the house down and start again, but here’s the “before” tour of our little home.
